The 2nd case (genitive) is used to express a QUANTITY OF something.

 

Examples:

Kozarec vode [ a glass OF water ]

Liter mleka [ a litre OF milk ]

 

In particular, it is used after certain words expressing quantity, such as veliko [ a lot of ], malo

[ a bit ], koliko [ how much / many ].

Examples:

Imamo veliko dela. [ We have a lot of work. ]

Želim malo sira. [ I would like a bit of cheese. ]

Koliko znamk želite? [ How many stamps would you like? ]

 

 

The 2nd case (genitive) is also used for the DIRECT OBJECT of a sentence when the verb is in the NEGATIVE form.

 

Examples:

 

- Greš na pijačo? - Žal, nimam časa. [ - How about going for a drink? - Unfortunately, I haven't got time. ]

- Imaš punco? - Ne, nimam punce. [ - Have you got a girlfriend? - No, I haven't got a girlfriend. ]

Ne maram mesa. [ I don't like meat. ]

Ne potrebujejo dragega računalnika. [ They don't need an expensive computer. ]

Ne maramo velikih mest. [ We don't like big cities. ]

 

 

The 2nd case (genitive) is also used after the prepositions IZ, S/Z (meaning FROM)

 

Examples:

 

- Od kod si? - Sem iz Ljubljane. [ - Where are you from? - I am FROM Ljubljana. ]

- Od kod prihajaš? - Prihajam iz Trsta. [ - Where do you come from? - I come FROM Trieste. ]

- Od kod ste? - Sem iz Portugalske. [ - Where are you from? - I am FROM Portugal. ]

- Od kod prihajaš? - Prihajam z letališča. [ - Where are you coming from? - I'm coming FROM the airport. ]

- Od kod prihajajo? - Prihajajo s plaže. [ - Where are they coming from? - They're coming FROM the beach. ]

 

 

The 2nd case (genitive) is also used after other prepositions such as

 

BREZ [ WITHOUT ]

OD..... DO [ FROM....... TO ]

BLIZU [ NEAR ]

ZRAVEN [ NEXT TO ]

SREDI [ IN THE MIDDLE OF ]

NAMESTO [ INSTEAD OF ]

ZARADI [ BECAUSE OF ]
